California Gray Wolf Found Dead

Over the weekend, a heartbreaking discovery was made near Highway 36 in Tehama County: a young, endangered female gray wolf was found dead.

While the investigation into the cause of death is still underway, this tragedy signals a warning we have long feared — that even in California, wolves are not as safe as we believed.

We cannot allow California to follow in the footsteps of other states where wolf populations have been decimated through mismanagement, political pressure, and cruelty. States like Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho have already shown us what happens when fear and misinformation override science and compassion.

We must act now to prevent California from repeating those mistakes.

What This Means

  • California’s wolves remain highly vulnerable, despite protections under the Endangered Species Act.

  • The fight for coexistence is far from over—and escalating fear and hostility in rural areas threaten to undermine years of recovery efforts.

  • Without action, California could lose its chance to be a leader in ethical, science-based wildlife conservation.
